{"id":860,"date":"2020-09-07T23:08:04","date_gmt":"2020-09-07T23:08:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.doctormomx4.com\/?p=860"},"modified":"2020-09-07T23:08:08","modified_gmt":"2020-09-07T23:08:08","slug":"processed-food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.doctormomx4.com\/?p=860","title":{"rendered":"PROCESSED FOOD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I talk to my patients a lot about negative aspects of processed food.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0But I&#8217;m realizing that the term &#8220;processed&#8221; is not very specific.\u00a0 It can mean a lot of different things.\u00a0 \u00a0So, for my own sake, as well as others, I need to be more specific.<\/p>\n<p>Processed food just means that a plant or animal product has been altered in some way.\u00a0 Wheat from the field, for example, is not very useful until one grinds it into flour.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then it can be mixed with some salt and yeast to make some delicious bread.\u00a0 Therefore, processed food is not necessarily bad. It all depends on the type of processing. \u00a0How has it been changed?\u00a0 What has been added or removed?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In general, I tell patients that if God made something and that something is pretty tasteful on its own then it is best to eat it in is most natural form.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, let&#8217;s consider an apple.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.doctormomx4.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/download-3.jpeg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-868\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.doctormomx4.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/download-3.jpeg?resize=128%2C128&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"128\" height=\"128\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.doctormomx4.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/download-4.jpeg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"869\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.doctormomx4.com\/?attachment_id=869#main\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.doctormomx4.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/download-4.jpeg?fit=217%2C175&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"217,175\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"download (4)\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.doctormomx4.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/download-4.jpeg?fit=217%2C175&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-869\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.doctormomx4.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/download-4.jpeg?resize=217%2C175&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"175\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.doctormomx4.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/download-5.jpeg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-870\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.doctormomx4.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/download-5.jpeg?resize=186%2C272&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"186\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A small apple picked fresh from the tree has about 77 calories and 3.6 grams of fiber. \u00a0The skin is mostly insoluble fiber and the flesh of the apple is mostly soluble. \u00a0This soluble fiber is largely pectin, a fiber that can bind cholesterol&#8230;and therefore lower your cholesterol level. \u00a0Hence, the &#8220;apple a day keeps the doctor away!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But now consider one cup of unsweetened applesauce. \u00a0 The apple has been processed by having it&#8217;s skin removed. \u00a0A cup of applesauce has about 100 calories but only 2.7 grams of fiber. \u00a0It is still good for you, just not quite as good for you as the apple.<\/p>\n<p>Now consider one cup of unsweetened apple juice. \u00a0It has 116 calories and only 0.25 grams of fiber. \u00a0Nothing bad for you &#8230;just not as good. \u00a0So processing can take a food from &#8220;GREAT&#8221;
