(thanks to my husband&#8230;.a farmer wannabe) \u00a0 It\u2019s a fun time, too, to study a little botany. \u00a0I\u2019ve been reading about herbs. \u00a0\u00a0Used for both culinary and medicinal purposes, herbs are fun to study and may be easy to grow.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>MINT (on my list for this year)<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>I have read that mint is an herb that can become invasive in a garden, so it is wise to place it in a large pot. (oops&#8230;too late&#8230;already in the ground&#8230;and I had a friend warn me about this too, so we&#8217;ll have to replant that one!) \u00a0The leaves are great for seasoning and are felt to help indigestion. \u00a0Different types of mint have different flavors\u2026..think peppermint, spearmint, etc.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>FENNEL (also a new hopeful addition)<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Fennel, pictured above, is a\u00a0herb with yellow flowers. it is a member of the carrot family. \u00a0 It\u2019s supposed ability to help eyesight\u00a0was immortalized by Longfellow in a poem\u00a0in 1842, titled The Goblet of Life.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<dl>\n<dd>Above the lower plants it towers,<\/dd>\n<dd>The Fennel with its yellow flowers;<\/dd>\n<dd>And in an earlier age than ours<\/dd>\n<dd>Was gifted with the wondrous powers<\/dd>\n<dd>Lost vision to restore.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.doctormomx4.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/220px-Foeniculum_July_2011-1a.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"573\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.doctormomx4.com\/?attachment_id=573#main\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.doctormomx4.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/220px-Foeniculum_July_2011-1a.jpg?fit=220%2C263&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"220,263\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"220px-Foeniculum_July_2011-1a\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.doctormomx4.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/220px-Foeniculum_July_2011-1a.jpg?fit=220%2C263&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-573\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.doctormomx4.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/220px-Foeniculum_July_2011-1a.jpg?resize=220%2C263&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Just don\u2019t plant fennel near dill (cross pollination) or tomatoes or potatoes!<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>ROSEMARY (been growing beside our home for years)<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I don\u2019t think there is any scientific evidence of medicinal value for rosemary. \u00a0If anyone knows of one, I&#8217;d love to hear about it! \u00a0I just love the smell and it\u2019s great for cooking. \u00a0It will make omega-3 oils more heat stable!<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>DILL (already in our garden)<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>My favorite! \u00a0I love it in salads. \u00a0However, my family does not like it quite as much as I do so my salad always has more than theirs. \u00a0It is a member of the celery family. \u00a0A famous member\u2026.think Dill Pickles! \u00a0And is has some antibacterial activity against Staph aureus.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>CILANTRO (also called coriander &#8211;\u00a0growing now)<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Since I have discovered my love for avocados and guacamole, I love cilantro being just outside my door. \u00a0And did you know that it was in Coca-cola\u2019s secret original formula?<\/div>\n<p>Again, not much known medicinal use. \u00a0But then, again, there may be benefits yet to be discovered!<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>OK\u2026I\u2019m done. \u00a0My\u00a0green thumb is not very well developed, but I\u2019m trying.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>IT\u2019S A FUN THING TO EXPERIMENT OUTSIDE IN A GARDEN OF YOUR OWN! \u00a0WHY NOT PLANT YOUR OWN\u2026IN THE SOIL OR IN POTS\u2026.ENJOY THE\u00a0MONTHS AHEAD!<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spring brings gardeners out of hibernation. \u00a0Unfortunately, there are hours of weeding in my future\u2026but I love having a small garden near the house.
