{"id":379,"date":"2017-01-14T13:29:07","date_gmt":"2017-01-14T13:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.doctormomx4.com\/?p=379"},"modified":"2017-01-14T13:29:07","modified_gmt":"2017-01-14T13:29:07","slug":"salt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.doctormomx4.com\/?p=379","title":{"rendered":"Salt?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I begin by admitting how much I love salt. \u00a0At one point in my life, I was even salting pizza. \u00a0But the things you can get away with when you are young, you find out you CANNOT really get\u00a0away with after all!<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>In this country, we definitely try to get away with eating lots of salt. \u00a0An average daily salt intake in the United States is 3400\u00a0mg. \u00a0There is a lot of debate as to how harmful excessive salt really is. \u00a0There is a possibility that the sodium\/potassium ratio of your diet may be more important than your sodium intake. \u00a0Overall, however, there is a general consensus that Americans eat too much salt (or sodium, the main ingredient in table salt) \u00a0And there is also general consensus\u00a0that there is a relationship between salt intake and high blood pressure.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Once you develop high blood pressure, limiting sodium intake is important. \u00a0But even\u00a0before that, it makes sense that limiting sodium helps limit the amount of fluid in your body, and therefore the amount of work your heart has to do to pump that fluid and the amount of work your kidneys have to do to filter that fluid.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>So\u00a0limiting sodium intake is part of eating healthy. \u00a0Doing that in America, however, can have its challenges. \u00a0You\u00a0could move to another country\u2026.but according to The Washington Post, people consume too much salt in 181 out of 187 countries. \u00a0If you do decide to move in order to restrict your salt intake, it appears you should head to Kenya, Cameroon, or Gabon. \u00a0And hey, its warm too! \u00a0I may consider this further\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>So what to do? \u00a0Again, the answer seems to be to cut out processed food. \u00a0If it is in a can or jar or box, and is processed in any way, it likely has too much sodium.\u00a0 Deli meats are especially bad. \u00a0Hot dogs (are they really a food?) should really be a rare treat.\u00a0\u00a0Restaurant meals also have a lot of hidden sodium.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Heath gurus say\u00a0not to eat more than 2300 mg of sodium a day. \u00a0So the best advice is to stick with fresh foods, use alternative spices, and avoid processed foods. \u00a0Then chances will be higher then that you will live longer and feel better!<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I begin by admitting how much I love salt. \u00a0At one point in my life, I was even salting pizza. \u00a0But the things you can get away with when you are young, you find out you CANNOT really get\u00a0away with after all!
